K-P police committee to probe attacks on transgender community


PESHAWAR: Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Qazi Jamil of Peshawar formed a four-member high level committee to submit a comprehensive report on the incidents of violence against the transgender community in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

The committee comprises of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Javed Iqbal, Superintendent of Police (SP) Cantt Waseem Riaz, SP City Shahzada Kukab and SSP Investigation Nisar Khan. The decision to form a committee came after frequent reports surfaced of transgender persons being mugged, assaulted and harassed regularly across the city.

Talking to The Express Tribune, CCPO Jamil said that the police was fully committed to safeguarding the rights of the transgender community and every possible step was being taken to solve the issue and formation of a high level committee was also a part of these efforts. He further added that the committee has been formed to review the security needs of the community.

The team has been tasked to meet representatives of the community and stakeholders to undertake a survey to identify the area where the community is concentrated. Furthermore, the team will identify the problems faced by the community and try to find immediate workable solutions.

Last week, a transgender person was killed and the body cut to pieces in the Pishtakhara area on the outskirts of the city by ‘boyfriend’ who was upset with her being in other relationships. This resulted in public outcry across the country as the civil society demanded proper protection for the community in the city and otherwise.
